Let’s walk through a practical, real-world scenario. A merchant vessel has an LOA of 200 meters. The Master decides to deploy exactly 6 shackles of chain into the water.

First, calculate the chain length: 6 shackles × 27.432 meters = 164.59 meters.
Next, add the ship’s overall length: 164.59m + 200m = 364.59 meters total radius.
Finally, convert this radius to nautical miles for chart plotting: 364.59 ÷ 1852 ≈ 0.197 Nautical Miles (or roughly 2 cables).
