If the water depth is 20 meters and your hawse pipe is 5 meters above the waterline, your total vertical drop is 25 meters.
Using a safe 6:1 scope ratio: 25 meters × 6 = 150 meters of chain.
Convert to shackles: 150 ÷ 27.5 = 5.45 shackles. Standard maritime practice dictates rounding up, so you should order exactly 6 shackles deployed to the water.
