Understanding Gyro Error
A Gyrocompass is an advanced electromechanical device designed to seek True North based on the Earth's rotation. While highly accurate, mechanical friction, latitude speed errors, and electrical fluctuations cause the gyro to drift slightly. This difference between True North and Gyro North is the Gyro Error.
Gyro Error is labeled as either "High" or "Low". The golden rule of marine navigation states: "Gyro Least, Error East. Gyro Best, Error West." If your gyro reads a higher degree than the actual true bearing, the error is West (High). The OOW must determine this error daily by shooting the sun, stars, or using a known transit bearing.
Understanding Magnetic Compass Error
Unlike a gyrocompass, a magnetic compass points toward the Earth's Magnetic North Pole, not Geographic True North. The total difference between True North and Compass North is called Compass Error. This error is actually the mathematical combination of two distinct elements: Variation and Deviation.
- Magnetic Variation: The natural difference between True North and Magnetic North caused by the Earth's magnetic field. This value is geographically fixed and changes slightly every year. You find it printed directly on the navigational chart's compass rose.
- Magnetic Deviation: The error caused by the ship's own magnetic field (steel hull, cargo, electrical equipment) interfering with the compass needle. This changes based on the ship's heading. You find this value on the ship's Deviation Card.
Practical Application: The TVMDC Formula
Navigators use the classic mnemonic TVMDC (True Virgins Make Dull Company) to convert a True Course into a Compass Course. Suppose you need to steer a True Course of 090°. You check the chart and see the Variation is 5° East. Your ship's Deviation Card states that on an Eastward heading, the Deviation is 2° West.
When converting down from True to Compass, you subtract East and add West. Therefore, 090° True - 5° East Variation = 085° Magnetic. Then, 085° Magnetic + 2° West Deviation = 087° Compass Course.
